The Wrong Wolf

Jess Lowry, Executive Director, Sunset Ridge Collective

Author Jess Lowry You’ve likely heard the parable of the two wolves. This Sunday as I listened to Scott teach on Mark 13:1-8, that parable came to mind.  The wolf that wins is the one that we feed.

I’ve been feeding the wrong wolf lately.  My health continues to progress more slowly than I’d like, my house is on the market but not sold, Nathan blew out his knee and is having surgery, etc. etc.  And that’s what I’ve focused on, the what ifs.  What if I never get better, what if the house doesn’t sell, what if we don’t make up our budget deficit…I’ve allowed anxiety and fear of the future to rob my present day.

My Facebook memories have served as an important spiritual reminder of what it looks like to feed the other wolf.  Memories from 7 years ago show a daily list of gratitudes that I posted.  During this time we were in the middle of the legal battle to keep our (not yet) adopted daughter Shiloh.  Each day we woke up in the morning we did so knowing that it could be the last day she was with us.  This time lasted for 8 months.  I was so hyper-aware of the gift of each moment during that time because I knew, like Scott shared Sunday, that the only day that was promised was the day we were living.  And so I thanked God.  For every tiny joy that I clung to like a lifeline of hope, for her silly giggles, quiet family evenings, our incredible support system that is this church community.

In a book I’m reading on Conscious Leadership, the authors describe two belief sets that we are all operating from:

  1. Those who believe they lack something and want it and are seeking someone or something from outside of themselves to get it.

  2. Those who believe they are already whole, complete and lack nothing.

The first group moves in the world from a place of fear, and the second from a place of love.

We get to choose how we decide to view the world and our lives, from a place of fear, anxiety, and scarcity—or from a place of lacking nothing, knowing that all we need is always provided by our Good Shepherd.  May we be people who choose the greatest path—Love.

Love - Jess
