God in Disguise

Jess Lowry, Executive Director, Sunset Ridge Collective

“God comes to you disguised as your life”

This quote from Paula D’arcy came first from my friend Randy Rutland, and 10 minutes later in the form of a little card in our women’s discipleship group.

I confessed to God earlier that morning in prayer that I was feeling an unsettled discontentment in my life, that I wasn’t recognizing God’s gifts around me and asked for help seeing what God might want me to see.  Only an hour later, two of the same message.

I remember when our family moved to San Antonio back in 2011.  Juju was 1, Luca was 3, and we left my whole family, our community to take a chance on a job promotion for Nathan.  We sold most of our belongings, I quit my banking job, and we set off for a new adventure that we felt God calling us into.  Nothing went according to plan; graciously my mother-in-law and father-in-law let us move into part of their carriage house, a living space of 400 sq. ft.  For our family of 4.

I was terribly lonely, very depressed, and felt surrounded by a cloud all of the time.  I called my best friend Laura and she told me to find the places of light.

Those places of light were Wednesday morning Ladies’ Bible Class—Janet Ihfe, Julie Mankins, Elaine Thorne, and so many others who welcomed me like family.  Then a Bible study with Vanita Hill, Janyce Sisson, Ashley Lockridge, Nellie Springston, and Julie Mankins.  Then a book called 1,000 Gifts fell into my lap and I learned about the practice of gratitude—a practice of counting the ways that God shows up in our everyday lives.  I started counting the little glimmers of light and I was changed.  Ashley and I started a class to share this practice with the women in our community and we met weekly to learn and share how God was showing up all around us.

God comes to us disguised as our lives.  This week we will celebrate the holiday of Thanksgiving, but I am recommitting my heart to the practice of thanksgiving every day.  May we be people who believe that God is alive and active in our world and may we see God through all of the big and small ways.

Join me in this practice of gratitude—I can’t wait to hear what you see.

Love - Jess

Message from Leadership

This Christmas season we are excited to worship together in our beautiful Chapel at both 9am and 11am services.  Our staff has worked to prepare our special place and we look forward to gathering with you this Sunday.

As we begin Advent together there are a number of ways that you can participate in this year’s study in addition to the worship service each week:

Purchase a book to read the lessons that will correspond with the sermon lesson each week.

Join one of the groups that meets on Sunday morning at 10:00 to study the topics with others.

We will learn this season how to worship fully, spend less, give more, and love all.

Praises & Prayers
