Around Our Community

This week, Sunset Ridge Collective hosted a meeting of congregations with The Open Table. The work being done here has energized us that it is possible to marry our passion for the work in our neighborhood with a discipleship model that exists that could bring it to life.

Limitless Love

Jess Lowry, Executive Director, Sunset Ridge Collective

When I was a kid (and still today) I loved go-karts.  My dad, brother, and I would race and on many occasions be ejected from the track for bumping or spinning each other out around a corner (this also still happens today).

I operate my go-kart very strategically: all gas, no brakes.

Yes, if you know me, you see that could be a metaphor for how I live my life too.

But on my little kart I would get so frustrated because it never goes as fast as I wanted it to go. This is due to an intentional mechanism called a governor.  It literally governs that top speed that you can drive.

Did you know that according to research we have an internal governor called an upper limit? According to psychologist and author Gay Hendricks our nervous systems have an upper limit that actually limits us from growing past a certain threshold.  We create these thresholds based on the stories we tell ourselves such as “I don’t want to outshine anyone else” or “I am intrinsically flawed and not worthy of (fill in the blank).”

As I was listening to Scott preach this past Sunday on Mark 10:2-16, my curiosity was piqued around this concept of our upper limits when it comes to receiving the love of God.

He asked the question “Why are you trying to get out of love?”  As he cradled his arms in the way a parent holds their newborn child, he invited us all to be held in the arms of a God who loves us wholly and deeply.

And so I wonder, do we have an upper limit on how lovable we believe we are?  Do we say, yes Jesus loves me, but I am not worthy?  I would dare say that I am afraid that is the truth for most of us, it certainly is for me.

But here is the very good news—
you are loved
you are loved
you are loved.

Not because of who you are or what you do but because when it comes to loving, Jesus is all gas, no brakes and there is no governor.  No upper limit except the story you create.

So this week, I invite you to let yourself fall into the arms of a God who moved heaven and earth to be with you.  And from that love carry it into the world who needs you now more than ever to show them what love really looks like.

Love-Jess
