Storytelling
Mae Czarnecki, Communications Coordinator, Sunset Ridge Collective
As Pastor Scott went through some well-known, but hard to reconcile phrases in Mark, he reminded us that we move through the world talking to different people in different ways. This was never more evident to me than homeschooling my three daughters.
Throughout the day, at the end of our lessons, as their respective skills dictated, the girls would often recount what they just learned. The youngest may draw a picture, or verbally express what she picked up. The middle would sit and speak to me in a way that allowed me to write down exactly what she said and read it back to her before she could write on her own. And the oldest would sit in a room over, pen her sentences and paragraphs, and come back and read it to me herself. They all started in the picture and recitation stage, and slowly graduated to papers.
Telling stories is something we all love to do. Each of their skills reflect where in the process they were when we stopped homeschooling. The youngest can perform a gripping, hilarious story whenever she feels the opportunity is ripe. The middle has notebooks and notebooks of half-started novels with chapter illustrations. The oldest is winning both writing and drawing awards as she enters high school, despite being the most verbally reserved. In this way, they are engaging in class, with their families, and one day, out in the world.
It’s what we make room for here at Sunset Ridge Church. We grab coffee with one another, slowly walk around the circle at the park, and sit on the cool stone benches in the courtyard to hear each other’s stories. When I walk into the office nearly everyday, I get to eavesdrop on Jan and Sean trying to hash out the exact details of a family they’ve known for decades and just exactly where they got their radiator fixed the third time it gave out on them. Being in a congregation that is 75 years old presents us with the privilege of a rich history that few of us newer members can tell, but would love to hear. In each of our unique ways.
As your Communications Coordinator here, I want to invite you for a coffee (on me), or a walk (especially when it cools down), or a sit in our beautiful courtyard. I want to hear more of the stories, in whatever language you have to tell it, to share with our growing community. I’m happy to share my story, too, but I’m more excited to hear yours in hopes to make it “ours.”
