A Message from the Board of Trustees

Sunset Ridge has been growing in mission and community, guided by our calling to follow Jesus, reach people, and radiate God’s love and hope. As part of that journey, the Board is prayerfully exploring a meaningful question:

Should our name remain Sunset Ridge Church of Christ, or shift to Sunset Ridge Church?

This is not a departure from our history or tradition, but a reflection on whether our name is creating any barriers to the mission we believe God has given us.

We’re asking each member of our church family to do two things:

Pray over this question.

Share your discernment in writing, or sign up for a phone conversation with a Board member.

All input will be reviewed on Monday, July 21.

Thank you for joining us in this prayerful process.

Beyond Sunday
”Do for one what you wish you could do for many.”

Jess Lowry, Executive Director & Pastoral Leader, Sunset Ridge Church & Sunset Ridge Collective

It’s a quote I saw online last week that has become a mantra. Not unlike the message of the starfish parable, this important reminder refocuses my heart and mind to what I can do (show up for the people in front of me) and what I cannot (heal or solve everything). When I lose focus I become paralyzed with the overwhelm of all of the darkness.

The mountains look so large that I simply have to remember to walk one day at a time holding my Shepherd’s hand.

On Sunday Scott talked about walking through the valley and looking for where there is peace - that we have an opportunity right now to find that and be that in the world.

I can’t remember a time that felt more urgent than it does now.

Showing up, being love, spreading light - it used to feel a bit more optional - like when all of the stars were aligned and we were well-rested and well-fed, then we had the wherewithal to be goodness in the world.

And now we find ourselves (locally) at a level of communal devastation. Like our electronic devices, even when we are not consciously thinking about our friends, neighbors, and loved ones horrendously impacted by the flooding, it is running there in the background - open tabs of grief, confusion, anger, etc. Our resilience is low, our energy is low, our anxieties and fears are high.

Even those who were not directly impacted are finding their own grief and traumas rising to the surface.

So how do we rebuild hope in the midst of all of this?

We walk one step at a time.

We shine love in the dark

We do for one person what we wish we could do for many.

You know what that is; just take a minute and listen - it’s already there in your heart. Today is the day you act on it. And you do it again tomorrow.

Because there are people who have lost their whole entire world and if you haven’t, then I pray you have the courage to be that tiny flame helping them find their way through the valley.

We can’t do this on our own human strength but we have a Shepherd who lights a path out of the darkness.

May it start with you and me.

Love-Jess
