Around the Community
Last month's Good Acres Roundtable sparked an exciting new initiative—The Nuevos Vecinos Supper Club! Inspired by the discussion on financial opportunities for families at Nuevos Vecinos, this weekly gathering will bring neighbors together over delicious, donation-based meals prepared by the families themselves. All proceeds will go directly to support their work.
The first supper club will take place on Thursday, February 20th, at the Goliad Road Community of Promise (1630 Goliad Rd., SATX, 78223).
Here’s how you can get involved:
Join for dinner and help create a welcoming space. [RSVP Here!]
Spread the word by sharing flyers with friends and neighbors.
Help form a Hospitality Team to sponsor and support a weekly supper.
Provide in-kind donations like plates, cups, and activity supplies.
Let’s use our networks to uplift this incredible opportunity for our neighbors!
People Who Party
Jess Lowry Executive Director Sunset Ridge Church of Christ & Sunset Ridge Collective
Each night at bedtime Shiloh has been reading the Bible to me. It’s a special experience hearing the Word of God through my daughter’s voice, like it is when we speak God’s Word together in worship on Sunday mornings, all different voices and ages together in unity.
She told me the story of John the Baptist and had a number of questions about baptism, if I was baptized, how and when, etc. This led us to a family dinner where each of us shared the story of our baptism. Luca was baptized in the Sanctuary January 7th, 2018, Julian on Easter Sunday 2020 in his Mimi’s swimming pool after online worship.
Nathan and I smiled at the realization that he was baptized at Echo Meadows Church of Christ after Wednesday night church by his beloved grandpa at 12 years old, and I followed his lead and grandpa baptized me in the same baptistry after Wednesday night church a decade later.
As we shared these stories with Shiloh she asked questions; her Mimi and Ga and Grandma were there, too, and she got to hear the stories of generations of faithful commitment. As we told these stories, we remembered and we celebrated.
You see, I am a person who parties and usually in a pretty big way. I’m known to host giant disco ball-lit dance parties for birthdays, and my Julian has to rein me in when it comes to his birthday because he prefers smaller-scale, simple celebrations. What I learned through remembering these stories is that we have cause for celebration each and every day.
While things may not go exactly how we planned or wanted, there are reasons for joy. As Scott Heare shared on Sunday–we have the best reason to party. We walk through our daily lives with the Holy Spirit alive within us, we are loved by a Savior who moved heaven and earth to reach us (and still does)--so instead of hanging our heads, let’s search for the reasons to celebrate.
Join me this week in sharing a story of remembrance, mark a date and retell the story every year at that time, celebrate the seemingly mundane moments in your one beautiful life. May your joy be contagious.
Love,
Jess
