Flourishing & Transformation
Jess Lowry, Executive Director, Sunset Ridge Collective
As I sat in Bible Study last Sunday listening to our reading from Mark 10:17-31, I was struck by the thought that transformation never ends. Often we can be found approaching things like a battle to be won, a goal to be completed, or a task to check off the list.
But we see throughout Scripture, like the rich young man that when we think we have it all accomplished, there is another lesson ahead for our transformation.
The theme of transformation surrounds my work daily as it has for the years I’ve committed my heart to the transformative work that God is doing in and around our church. I find myself searching for transformation stories when I travel; perhaps I am looking for a little extra sprinkle of hope that shows me what we believe God is doing in our community is really possible.
I attended a retreat in England last month and had the privilege of hearing the story of a local hops farmer. He noted that out in the countryside there was no local pub or place for people to gather together so he stopped selling his hops elsewhere and started brewing his own beer. The first year he sold beer and water in his back garden and the whole surrounding community showed up. The next year he added ciders and snacks, and by the time we got there a couple of years later he had food trucks, a gathering hall, a stage for live music and dozens of tables that were filled with people—all looking for a place to be together.
You see, a church growth expert shared that in the UK, the Church missed out on the call to be changed decades ago and as a result is mostly nonexistent. People like the local farmer, non-profit organizations, and social enterprises are stepping into the gap that was left behind—to provide places of belonging, connection, and care.
As my heart grieved the gravity of that message, I found a sense of incredible hope for what God is doing at Sunset Ridge and for how you (we) have opened our hands and surrendered it all to God. Charis Park is the showcase example of this flourishing and transformation and we know that the connection and the belonging that are taking place are only just beginning.
This weekend we will celebrate the new beginning that is being ushered in through Charis Park. And as we celebrate, we do so from a posture of open-handedness for how God desires to use the space, for how God desires to continually transform us through it, and all of it for God’s glory.
I can’t wait to see what’s ahead for all of us lucky enough to get to be a part of this little corner of God’s great big world.
See you Saturday.
Love-Jess

From Our Leadership
On Sunday October 20th, our Trustee over Finance, Gregg Alba, reviewed our current financial situation in both services. We have had a number of unexpected expenses in relation to the maintenance of the building including insurance, security, HVAC, and pest control. If you have any questions, please contact Gregg Alba, our Trustee over finance.
We are confident in God’s continued provision and look forward with hope for how God will continue to sustain His church. We ask each of you to prayerfully consider an additional meaningful contribution this year on the following Sundays: October 27, November 17, and December 15.
Additionally, we will be making one small change to the 9:00 worship service offering. Contributions will be gathered in the basket in the back of the sanctuary and a plate will no longer be passed. We encourage our members to set up contributions with your online banking system.
Thank you for your faithfulness and commitment to our community.
