“Finding Hope”
Where have you found hope this year? What if you suddenly found yourself surrounded by a great company of the heavenly host proclaiming: “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests”? Would that do it? Were the shepherds we hear about in Luke’s gospel filled with hope by that? I’m guessing they were, after they stopped shaking from fear. At least I would have been. It’s easy to be hopeful when witnessing something truly wonderful. A blessed event like a newborn baby, a wedding, or when seeing an awe-inspiring creation of our God, like a star-filled sky. But what about all of the other times? Can we find hope without wonder? In his book Honest Advent, Scott Erickson states that “familiarity kills wonder”. I think that it might be the same with hope. What if we are surrounded by hope all of the time, but we have just gotten so familiar with it, that it just doesn’t seem so hopeful anymore?
I described hope as being cumulative in my sermon this past Sunday. If we miss everyday opportunities to fill up on hope, then our tank gets low. The holiday season hype leads us to believe that hope and wonder surround us. As Christians we know that to be true, even if we aren’t able to see it, or feel it all of the time.
This season, and after, ask the Spirit to reveal wonder. Let’s help reveal God’s wonder to everyone around us. And hope will follow. Let’s radiate!

God, we gather in gratitude, thankful for the ways you seek to revive us! Let the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts work together to praise you in this hour. Grant your Spirit to move our hearts and inspire each of us to share your steadfast love with all whom we encounter. Help us to join in giving only what is good, not only today but every day. Amen
