Beyond Sunday
A Sabbath Summer

Jess Lowry, Executive Director & Pastoral Leader, Sunset Ridge Church & Sunset Ridge Collective

“Go where you’re sent, stay where you’re put, give everything you have to the world between your own two feet.”

I heard Jill Briscoe speak at a conference a decade ago, but this quote has stayed with me ever since. It came back up as our discipleship group was studying Psalm 131 this week.

As David writes “my eyes are not raised too high, I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me” I wonder what it looks like to live with enough. To be present, contented, peaceful in whatever particular place I am in–abiding in the presence of God.

I’ve interpreted this concept of giving everything you have too literally at times, as I have the concept of self-emptying, and am learning through our series on stillness that abiding in God has a rootedness as the psalmist writes in the Message version of Psalm 131–of keeping our feet on the ground. There is a steady stability of this way of being that looks less like burnt-out exhaustion and more like a contented, weaned child.

As my family prepares for our big move this weekend, we’ve been working almost non-stop. But at a certain point in each day I am hearing the word enough, and I am learning to be content with what I have done. This is a far cry from the constant pushing that I am used to - just one more box, one more e-mail, one more item on the to-do list.

As we come to a close this Sunday on the stillness series, my prayer is that we wouldn’t simply turn the page and move on to our next thing but instead we would walk into this summer with a little slower pace, and a quieter heart. I hope you’ll join me in what I am calling Sabbath summer, a time that is focused on resting in God rather than producing, contentment over striving, and presence over big lofty plans.

I can’t wait to see what we will learn.

Love,

Jess
