Before the service, join us for a Potluck Easter Brunch at 10:00 AM in the Fellowship Hall.  Everyone is invited to bring a dish to share.  Volunteers are also needed to help set up, serve, and clean up; please send a note to nancy@sunset-ridge.org

Before we worshipping together, Children’s Programming will start at 10:50 AM with a special time of worship and story beginning, then join the rest of the congregation for communion, baptisms, and the closing of service.

Beyond Sunday
Putting the Word into practice this week

TURN
Jess Lowry, Executive Director, Sunset Ridge Church of Christ, Sunset Ridge Collective
Turn.

It’s a simple word we use every day.  Turn around when we’re heading in the wrong direction, turn the french toast so it doesn’t burn, take turns to share space or a toy or some other goodness with someone else, turn up the music, turn down the noise.

This word turn has been surrounding my heart and mind as we continue through this Jonah series, and as we were invited into a time of Lenten repentance and reflection.

I wrote a little in this week’s Goodness Weekly about the practice of turning away from thoughts filled with anxiety and fear and turning toward the present moment.  This week Richard Rohr wrote a story of a nun practicing centering prayer and chastizing herself for having 10,000 thoughts interrupt her time in God’s quiet presence.  Father Thomas Keating responded to her with “How lovely, 10,000 opportunities to return to God”.

In my life, I continue to return to God. Recently as we have been exploring the topic of baptism with our youngest Shiloh, I have shared an awareness that my turning to God was not a singular event.  When I was applying for seminary and was required to write my personal testimony, I began to write I became a Christian when…and then again, and then again.  There were eight catalytic moments that I could name as I wrote where a new understanding of what it meant to follow Jesus came along with a shedding of who I was before.

Today that number looks far more like the nun’s because I am becoming more aware that I get to repent/return with every thought and action in every given moment.

I invite you this week to practice turning with me.  Return, even if only a glance, toward a God who has turned to you time and time and time again throughout all history.  May you find yourself returning over and over throughout your day and experience the joy and peace of Christ that comes each moment as we return Home.

Love,

Jess
