Connections
On Wednesdays, Sunset Ridge Collective offers an Open Studio Paint Session, open to adults of all ages who wish to explore creativity in a reflective and supportive setting. You may bring your own supplies or use the watercolor materials provided with a small donation.
Artist Kathy Derickson is the facilitator in the studio, and is available for support as you work.
This time is intended to nurture both personal reflection and community connection. Painting invites us to slow down, release stress, and engage in the practice of sacred creativity—one of our core pillars.
All are welcome to share in this contemplative rhythm of creating together.

“Momma, come see, it’s SO beautiful!”
I was gathering the last of the supplies for my boys’ football game on Saturday morning while my eight-year-old waited out front. She couldn’t wait for me any longer and kept calling for me to come witness what she was seeing.
“Look! There are kids over there on the trampoline.
See the dad walking his baby in the stroller?
And there’s an older couple walking their dog…
Our neighborhood is soooo beautiful!”
My family has practiced Sabbath off and on for the past decade. Our study of the Ten Proclamations has re-anchored us in a rhythm we’d drifted from. That Saturday morning, as I rushed out the door, the practice of Sabbath—and the wonder of my daughter—interrupted my hurry.
Be present here, I heard my heart say.
Through Shiloh’s eyes, I saw the beauty and magic she was naming. She was absolutely right—it was a beautiful, ordinary Saturday morning in the neighborhood.
Sabbath reorients us.
I noticed throughout the rest of the day that I was more present and aware in my body. I felt peaceful, my nervous system calm. Nathan and I drove out to Blanco to one of my favorite places—Arnosky Flower Farm. We walked slowly among the blooms, watched a giant butterfly, admired the spectrum of pinks and reds on the dahlias, and sat together on the big back porch. We met a young couple struggling to get their Polaroid camera to work in the brilliant sunlight. We took several photos for them, and they captured one of us, too.
Over the years, people have asked me many questions about the “right” way to practice Sabbath. Those questions have been asked across time, haven’t they? If Sabbath is truly a gift of rest, then how do we actually live into it? Everything around us resists it. Most everything within us resists it too.
Sabbath awakens us to grace.
We become more than we were before—or perhaps closer to who we truly are: beloved. On Sabbath I am reminded that God is God and I am not, that the world keeps spinning even when I stop to receive the gift of rest.
This week, God is inviting you—for one day—to simply be. Be quiet. Be cooking. Be playing or reading or looking at flowers. A day without oughts or shoulds…a gift of grace. A day closer to Home.
