Around Our Community
This past week, 16 of our elementary schoolers spent the week at Sunset Camp learning about belonging in community. The camp ended on Thursday evening with a beautiful worship service the children crafted, including an original song they co-wrote with our worship band. We are so grateful for their willingness to share their gifts with this community and to the volunteers who helped immeasurably during camp!
This could not have happened without our amazing volunteers! We want to share a special thank you to:

In The Storm
Riley Stirman, Preaching Minister, Sunset Ridge Church
Last week, I had the privilege of helping one of the kids craft their very own sermon based on one of the stories that we had been discussing. I knew it was going to be great, but it surpassed my expectations. I think it’s a message we could all stand to hear. So, please enjoy this message by Ayla, a third-grader in our community, on the fiery furnace in Daniel 3.
~~~
Three men are in trouble with the king. They have a choice. Either worship the king, which is wrong. Or worship God and be thrown in the fire.
Imagine if you were in front of a fire. And you were going to go in for doing what was right. I would feel like life was kind of unfair. Everyone knows the ones we should be thanking and worshiping are God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Even when we get something from someone else, it’s God who provided them for us. He knows our needs and he’ll give us good things. Life is just sort of unfair sometimes. But that doesn’t mean that God is unfair. Even when life feels unfair, we can still find the positive side. Because of God. And he will protect us no matter what.
In dance school, a teacher asked if I wanted to join a class I hadn’t signed up for yet. So I joined with other girls who had signed up. I found out that another girl and me had a lot in common. We spent a lot of time together. We became good friends. But one day we found out she was moving away. When she moved, I felt like life was unfair because she was my best friend. I didn’t want to lose her. And sometimes I’m still so sad that she left. But when I think about that, I always remember to think on the positive side. She still comes to San Antonio for her birthday parties, and I still get to see her. And we’ll never stop being friends.
Sometimes when people find out that God can protect you, they do things and know they are going to be protected. Like maybe doing something we don’t know how to do yet. But above all, God wants us to be mindful of our actions. He wants us to think, Does God really want me to do this?
Because when we follow God, miracles happen.
Yes, and amen. Let’s go make a miracle.
A Liturgy for Belonging
Written by the Sunset Campers
God of the Heavens,
I am amazed at how powerful you are. You keep me safe and you help me. You are the most important.
I am grateful for your food and for your angels that watch over me. Thank you for your power that helps me.
I feel scared, worried, and hurried. Sometimes I feel sad.
I need help. I need you to be kind to me.
I know that you will be with me always. You are powerful and helpful. You promised to love me, and you are amazing.
I trust everything you say. You will protect me. You will help me with this mess.
I belong in God’s Kingdom. I belong with you, anywhere you place me.
Amen.
