Around Our Community

We are so grateful for teachers!  From the Sprouts School staff to the teachers at Camelot to those in our community who work in schools, we know that the work they do is meaningful to each student they encounter.  Thank you for all you do!

Mothers

Riley Stirman, Preaching Minister, Sunset Ridge Church

In high school, my friend J.T.'s house was the place to be.

Not only did his house have a pool table, a well-stocked board game closet, and proximity to a large open field where we could throw a Frisbee; his house was home to the woman that we all affectionately called Mama Marge.

Marge was J.T.'s mom.  Well, she was really everyone's mom.  Marge has this incredible ability to make everyone feel as if they had a place in her home.  She's warm, she's inviting, and she makes a snickerdoodle that will knock your socks clean off.  With how much time I spent with J.T. in high school, she really did function as another mom for me.

And what's really great is that she started leaning into this new identity as pseudo-foster mom for half the teenage boys in our youth group.  She started calling herself Mama Marge, even using the moniker to sign birthday cards for her adopted children.  Even to this day, I don't think I'm capable of saying her first name without the word Mama in front of it.

This Sunday is Mother's Day.  I am blessed to have a wonderful biological mother with whom I have a great relationship (Shout out to Sarah - graduating with a master's degree this Sunday!). But I recognize that this isn't the case for everyone.  I know this day can be a mixed bag of conflicting feelings.  For people who have lost their mothers.  For people who were never able to have children despite how much they wanted to.  For people who have lost children.  For people who have strained or nonexistent relationships with their mothers.

This week as we honor our mothers, I pray we remember that family isn't restricted to biology.  I know each of us have strong, loving women in our lives who functioned as surrogate mothers, all our own Mama Marges.  And I know that God's mercy is such that there are some family members you're born with and some that you find along the way.

Happy Mother's Day to all.  May God bless your family - all of your family.
