A Message from the Board of Trustees

Deadline Extended
Sunset Ridge has been growing in mission and community, guided by our calling to follow Jesus, reach people, and radiate God’s love and hope. As part of that journey, the Board is prayerfully exploring a meaningful question:

Should our name remain Sunset Ridge Church of Christ, or shift to Sunset Ridge Church?

This is not a departure from our history or tradition, but a reflection on whether our name is creating any barriers to the mission we believe God has given us.

We’re asking each member of our church family to do two things:

Pray over this question.

Share your discernment in writing, or sign up for a phone conversation with a Board member.

Thank you for joining us in this prayerful process.

Beyond Sunday
From Cookies to Bread

Den Slater, Pastor of Belonging, Sunset Ridge Church of Christ

This past Sunday, Scott began with the Lord’s Prayer (Luke 11:2-4). He mentioned that he once did an in-depth study on it and was surprised at how long it took just to wrestle with the first word: “Our.” Every word matters. We are invited to savor each one, but my “hard stop” was a little further down. I made it to “daily bread,” and then visions of colorful French macaron cookies (pretty little pastel sandwich cookies) popped into my thoughts.

The technique to make them is called macaronage. The baker sifts sugar and almond flour (gluten-free!) to ensure perfectly-sized particles, and then the dry mix is folded into a meringue of whipped egg whites. The baker pipes small circles of batter onto a baking sheet, and then the cookies rest for an hour before they are put into the oven. If they don't rest, they’ll split and develop uneven “feet” (the space under the crown of each cookie). I think people have that in common with macarons.

Making macarons is undeniably different from making first-century “daily bread.” Ancient breads started with wheat or barley flour, salt, and water. There were no preservatives, so fresh bread needed to be made daily. It was a dietary staple in the time of Jesus, so no wonder Christ declares that he is the bread of life (John 6:35). He is our sustenance, our daily bread.

In Christ, each of us becomes a cherished labor of love—recipients of God’s ongoing, delightful work in the world. And every Sunday, when we gather as a church community, we celebrate God’s invitation to all people. We share the bread of the communion table, and we petition God to fill us with the Holy Spirit and transform us into God’s love.

It seems we are asking for a lot, yet I’m reminded of the story that Jesus told immediately after he gave the Lord’s Prayer—the story where a neighbor displays “shameless audacity” in asking a sleepy friend to give some bread (Luke 11:8, NIV). We need that kind of audacity. While we cannot live on macarons, we certainly can live on Christ. Let us dare to be people who hold out our hands knowing that God will fill them with the most wonderful Daily Bread.

Prayers of the People

Please join us in honoring the life and legacy of Kathy George, Sunday, August 31st. We will gather to celebrate her memory, reflect on the joy she brought into our lives, and give thanks for her many years of devoted marriage to her loving husband.  There will be a service in the Chapel at 1:30 PM, followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall.
