A Message from the Board of Trustees

Sunset Ridge has been growing in mission and community, guided by our calling to follow Jesus, reach people, and radiate God’s love and hope. As part of that journey, the Board is prayerfully exploring a meaningful question:

Should our name remain Sunset Ridge Church of Christ, or shift to Sunset Ridge Church?

This is not a departure from our history or tradition, but a reflection on whether our name is creating any barriers to the mission we believe God has given us.

We’re asking each member of our church family to do two things:

Pray over this question.

Share your discernment in writing, or sign up for a phone conversation with a Board member.

All input will be reviewed on Monday, July 21.

Thank you for joining us in this prayerful process.

Beyond Sunday
”What’s in a name?”

Jess Lowry, Executive Director & Pastoral Leader, Sunset Ridge Church & Sunset Ridge Collective

I met Nathan Lowry when I was 18 years old, and he proposed just one month later. As we planned our wedding for the following fall, I asked if he would consider taking my last name instead of me taking his. As you might guess, he politely declined.

For me, the question was rooted deeply in identity. I was a Thibodeau through and through. In the town where we lived and worked, my grandfather was a local business owner and a pillar of the community. The name Thibodeau carried weight—and, if I’m honest, a fair amount of ego. I watched my father introduce himself with confidence in every room he entered. To me, being Jessica Thibodeau meant something.

Thibodeaus were bold, vibrant, and full of life. They were generous and lived in a way that felt abundant.
Could I still be all of that if I became Jessica Lowry?

In our passage this week, the man is referred to simply as the Demoniac. Jesus asks the spirit that has possessed him, “What is your name?” The response: “Legion.”

We then see the man transformed—clothed, seated at Jesus’ feet, and in his right mind.
And I can’t help but wonder:  what name was restored to him?
What identity did he reclaim as he returned to his village a changed man?

When Jesus asks, “What is your name?” I believe we’re being asked that same question today.
What names have you taken on?
What names have shaped your sense of identity?

Like my maiden name, I wonder if there are identities I’m still clinging to that are being invited into transformation—some that might need to be entirely shed, and others that remain part of me but are being redefined in the light of who I am in Christ. I will always be a Thibodeau, but I have other names now, too.

This week, I invite you to join me in reflecting on that question.
What names have you carried that no longer fit?
And what names were never yours to carry in the first place?

Just after this story in Luke, Jesus meets the bleeding woman—labeled Outcast, Unclean, Desperate. And in front of the whole community, He calls her Daughter. He changes her name. And she is restored.

May that kind of restoration happen within us—and through us.

Love,
Jess
